Austria's largest water-active stalactite cave
The Lurgrotte Peggau is located approx. 20 km north of the provincial capital and is an easily accessible and popular excursion destination in the Graz region.
It is the Schmelzbach stream that gives life to this underground labyrinth of the Lurgrotte.
The fact that this cave is described as a wonder of nature is not only due to the power of the water, which has enlarged the cave for millions of years and carved the rock into unique shapes, but also to the persistence of this element.
The one-hour guided tour takes you one kilometer deep into the world of stalactites and stalagmites on paved and secured paths.
The Lurgrotte Peggau is not only an ideal bad-weather program for bus groups, but also offers a cool change on hot summer days:
- the indoor temperature is + 10 degrees all year round
- the air humidity is almost 95
Guided tours
On a guided tour through the Lurgrotte Peggau, you are taken either 1 kilometer (one-hour tour) or 2 kilometers (two-hour tour) deep into the cave. You walk through the caves with electric lighting or LED lamps. A special atmosphere is created here.
If you wish, you can also bring your own lamps, but no torches or oil lamps. A newly designed cave museum (site of a Neanderthal camp), WLAN hotspot and a visitor lounge with photos and information are available to visitors.
