A paradise for hiking enthusiasts
The Nechnitz high plateau lies between Tyrnau and Fladnitz and is therefore located exactly between the Schöckel in the south and the Rote Wand in the north. On a clear day, both are close enough to touch! On the Nechnitz, two Almenland inns invite you to stop for a bite to eat, and it is also the starting point for many hikes.
The Rote Wand is a southeast-facing cliff face, the red color of the rock comes from inclusions of red-colored limestone and can best be admired in the morning sun. It is not uncommon to see ibex here, for which the Rote Wand is widely known. In spring, the rock faces are home to a veritable sea of peterstem, a rare primrose plant that is strictly protected.
The name Nechnitz is traced back to a small plant, the so-called Nagelkraut. The oldest documentary mention of the name dates back to 1240 (No(e)ctenz, Nochtenz). With some changes until 1456 Nachtnitz, the name is derived from the Slavic nohtnica (Nagelkraut). The plateau of the Nechnitz is approx. 1km wide and runs into the "Haseben" (Hausebner). The word Haseben comes from hasen = flat. There is also the Schöngrund district. This was only cleared later. All parts used to belong to different lordships. Schöngrund belonged to the Semriach lordship, the district of Nechnitz belonged to Stubenberg and Haseben and Frankenhofstatt, which consisted of 4 farms, belonged to the Stubegg lordship.
