Franz Scheikl via ferrata
The Franz Scheikl via ferrata is a via ferrata created and supervised by the Breitenau Friends of Nature under long-time chairman Franz Scheikl. The secured via ferrata leads to the Hochlantsch, the highest elevation in the Grazer Bergland at 1,722 meters above sea level. From the summit, you have a magnificent view down to the Teichalm, but also as far as the Rax, the Dachstein, Riegersburg and on to Hungary.
The climb uses gullies and ridges and always traverses slightly uphill to the summit. The most difficult sections are rated C/D, although the difficult exit ridge can be bypassed in an easier variant. After being completely renovated in July 2017, the via ferrata can now also be tackled by sporty families.
The nature around the Hochlantsch is also diverse. Strictly protected alpine flowers bloom here, such as the alpine rose, the auricula, the gentian and the cabbage robin, a rare orchid species. The area around Hochlantsch and Bärenschütz Gorge in particular for the impressive ibex that live here. The ibex, like the chamois, are real climbing artists. An encounter with them is a real nature experience.
On the descent you can take a break at the "Styrian Jokl" which is widely known for its cuisine. The rest of the way down to Breitenau then leads past the picturesque "Schüsserlbrunn" pilgrimage church , which was built right next to the Lantschmauer.
