216 steps to the magnificent basilica
After Mariazell, the pilgrimage church in Graz Mariatrost is the most important Marian shrine in Styria. The church was built in the high form of imperial baroque (1714) and was elevated to "Basilica minor" status by Pope John Paul II on October 28, 1999. Alongside Mariazell, Rein Abbey and Seckau Abbey, Mariatrost is the fourth basilica in Styria.
The steep staircase with 216 steps up to the basilica symbolizes a small pilgrimage route. This connecting path from "below" to "above" is intended to help pilgrims connect with God.
Pilgrim & hiking program
Pilgrim accompaniment inspires - with devotions, impulses and church services as well as pastoral and spiritual guidance, "praying with your feet" together becomes a unique experience.
