Church at the foot of the Hochlantsch
Schüsserlbrunn is a popular excursion destination and a much-visited pilgrimage church on the "Lantschmauer" at the foot of the highest mountain in the region, the Hochlantsch. Located at 1,363 m above sea level, the little wooden church can only be reached on foot.
The name "Schüsserlbrunn" is derived from the healing spring that rises from the rock face, where it is collected in small "rock bowls" and is said to have a healing effect, especially for eye complaints. There are many myths and legends surrounding the place. For example, a cow is said to have been miraculously found alive there after a fall. According to another legend, the water restored the sight of a blind man. The first church, which was subsequently built on this site, was also the beginning of the pilgrimage site.
The village was soon called "Schüsserlbrunn" by the locals. According to the parish chronicles, it was already a place of worship in the mid-18th century. A church built in 1882 was severely damaged by a rockslide. In 1974, the small church had to be moved ten meters onto a new foundation due to the threat of a rockfall.
Today, services are held in the chapel several times a year - mainly on the feast days of the Virgin Mary - and the church is still a popular destination for groups of pilgrims who are good walkers. From the "Steirischer Jokl" inn - a popular place for a rest and refreshment stop with a breathtaking view - there are 198 steps down to the little church.
ATTENTION: Winter closure from November 1 to April 30!
