The Augustinian canons' monastery
Between the Wechsel massif and its foothills in the north and the Masenberg in the south, the only remaining Augustinian canon monastery in Styria - Vorau Abbey - rests on a broad hill.
The collegiate church was built between 1660 and 1662 and redesigned in the Viennese High Baroque style from 1700. It is a Baroque work of art with opulent frescoes, magnificent altars and beautiful statues of saints. Special gems are the pulpit and the high altar, which are also wonderfully decorated and perfectly constructed down to the smallest detail.
It is not only the collegiate church that attracts visitors, but also the library. This houses around 17,500 volumes. However, the abbey owns several more volumes (approx. 40,000). The walls are decorated with wonderful paintings and sculptures. The sacristy is also considered an artistic gem of the monastery.
The church, the house chapel and the inner courtyards can be visited freely during the day, the library and the sacristy only as part of one of the regular guided tours.
