The nature park Almenland

The nature park Almenland, located 40 km north of Graz, is the largest contiguous low mountain pasture area in Europe and stretches from the Rabenwald in the east via the Teichalm and Sommeralm to the Bärenschützklamm in the west. The region comprises 125 alpine pastures, 6 communities and 2 districts and almost 13,000 inhabitants on an area of 428 km². It is a small-scale mountain farming region, which is mainly characterized by agriculture, forestry and tourism. On August 12, 2006, Almenland was awarded the title of "Nature Park", making it the youngest of 7 Styrian nature parks.

The alpine pastures of the Almenland Nature Park are not a primeval landscape, they are a piece of man-made nature. People here have learned to direct the forces of nature to their benefit, with respect and reverence for creation. The people in the nature park Almenland live consciously, know their strengths and use them for themselves, the community and nature. Basic tasks such as nature conservation, recreation, education and regional development in equal measure make the Almenland Nature Park a model region with a sustainable impact.

The region is characterized by lovingly tended meadows and pastures in valleys and on slopes, as well as extensive forest landscapes with imposing rock faces, gorges and ravines. One of the aims of the nature park is to preserve this diversity, protect what is endangered and restore what has been lost in a meaningful way.

The Almenland Nature Park has also developed into a leading tourist region where locals and guests can enjoy the recreational value as well as the high environmental and quality of life. Today, Almenland is a popular destination for young and old, with hiking trails, sports facilities and a great range of excursions, such as the summer toboggan run in Koglhof, the show tunnel in Arzberg or the many possibilities in nearby Graz.

The culinary side of Almenland is also very tasty and quality is always at the forefront. Wherever you see the ALMO-Genusswirte quality seal , you can look forward to the finest quality meat from the region. Strict guidelines (and above all the 'summer freshness' on the alpine pasture) ensure the quality of the meat supplied by the more than 3,000 alpine oxen. ALMO beef is the leading product of the region, making the ALMO Genusswirt a beef specialist at the highest level. Great importance is also attached to regional products, from honey, pasta and herbs to the region's delicious brandies.
