Dragon's lair

An important prehistoric site

An impressive portal in the mountain leads to the legendary dragon's cave. It is located approx. 500 m above the Mixnitz starting point on the western slope of the Röthelstein. Even in prehistoric times, around 50,000 years ago, it was sought out by humans, bears and wolves as a place of retreat.

To get to the entrance of the cave, you have to walk for a good 1.5 hours. The increasingly steep path leads through a rocky gully secured with chains just before the cave. However, the walk is definitely worth it, if only to get to know the place where the legend of the dragon originated. The cave got its name from the fossilized bones of the extinct cave bear. Finds can be viewed in the Eggenberg Archaeology Museum in Graz.

Trained cave guides accompany the tour participants through the cave, which is protected as a natural monument. It is one of the most important roosts for bats in Austria. For ecological reasons, the cave may only be visited as part of a guided tour. Guided tours take place from May to October. Special tours for school classes are possible.

The Dragon's Cave has been protected since June 26, 1928; a natural monument since 1949; access only during cave tours!
