Lurgrotte Semriach
Austria's largest active water cave
Around 25 kilometers north of Graz, you can visit Austria's largest active water cave and discover a bizarre cave world full of sinter formations, stalactites, huge rock domes and underground gorges.
Follow the Lurbach down into the cave world, but don't rely on it, because it will soon disappear into the depths of the cave and leave you alone on the path of this timeless, subterranean cosmos where imagination knows no bounds.
During a 70-minute guided tour, you will also experience a wonderful light show paired with classical music, which depicts a battle between good and evil. For some years now, the Lurgrotte in Semriach has also been the first stalactite cave in Austria to offer new, effective LED lighting. This allows the stalactite formations to shine even more impressively in their natural color and beauty.
Guided tours
The path leads through narrow corridors, grottos and niches, always accompanied by the dripping of water, to the bear grotto, where bones of the cave bear were found, which lived in Central Europe during the Ice Age and became extinct many millennia ago.
You soon reach the Great Dome, one of the highlights of the tour. Its size is particularly impressive: at 120 m long, 80 m wide and 40 m high, it is one of the largest cave domes in Central Europe.
The giant (the largest free-hanging stalactite in the world) is also unique: 13 meters high, 9 meters in circumference and weighing 40 tons, it descends from the cave ceiling into the room. The temperature in the cave is +9 degrees with 95% humidity.
