Riegersburg
The proudest fortress in Christendom
The unique Riegersburg lies 482 meters high on a volcanic rock in the East Styrian hill country and is considered one of the landmarks of Styria. It looks back on a long history and was Styria's bulwark against the east for centuries. The most famous owner was Elisabeth, Baroness von Galler, who had the castle generously extended, but was disrespectfully called "bad Liesl" by the people because of the many lawsuits she conducted.
Riegersburg Castle played a rather inglorious role during the witch hunts of the 17th century. The castle manager's wife, Katharina Paldauf, was the most prominent victim of the witch craze as the "flower witch" and was burned at the stake in Feldbach in 1675.
Today, Riegersburg Castle belongs to the Liechtenstein family and is a popular excursion destination. A beautiful path with many viewpoints leads up to the castle, but there is also a panoramic lift.
There is a permanent exhibition in the castle with regular guided tours, as well as special exhibitions.
The castle also has a well-known bird of prey observatory with regular demonstrations.
The castle is closed in winter from the beginning of November to mid-March!
The Riegersburg Opening for the 2025 season will take place on April 05, 2025.
