Rein Abbey
Oldest Cistercian monastery in the world
Rein Abbey is the oldest Cistercian monastery in the world; the monks have been "praying & working" here according to the rules of St. Benedict since 1129. The monastery library houses precious manuscripts and documents that are of great importance for the development of Styria. The tomb of the founder and first sovereign Margrave Leopold I also leads to the beginnings of the history of Styria. The guided tour gives visitors an insight into how the first monks reclaimed the land and what tasks today's monks face.
The monks are happy to welcome guests who take part in the choir prayer at 12 noon at the end of a guided tour.
