Tabor church
St. Thomas Church in Weiz
St. Thomas Church on the Tabor (Weiz main square) is the oldest building in the town of Weiz and also its landmark and coat of arms. The romantic church was consecrated by St. Thomas Becket of Canterbury as early as 1188.
In the 16th century, due to the Turkish invasions, a fortified tabor was erected around the church, with a ring wall, moat, round towers and a gate. As early as the 17th century, a residential house was built instead of the fortifications.
Impressive evidence of Roman settlement on Weiz soil can be found in the inner courtyard of the Tabor, on the south side of the church. The paintings, sculptures and late antique gravestones date from the 1st to 2nd century.
Inside the church you will find some well-preservedRomanesque and Gothic frescoes. These show episodes from the story of creation, the Passion of Christ and the story of the Virgin Mary. The frescoes were completed and restored in 1933 by Mr. Fritz Silberbauer, an artist from Weiz.
The large altarpiece by J. A. Ritter von Mölk is immediately visible on the baroque high altar. This shows the oldest view of the market town of Weiz.
