Hiking & tour suggestions
Hiking with a view & refreshments
The Almenland Nature Park is perfect for hiking! Numerous hiking trails and mountain peaks between the Teichalm and Sommeralm provide a wonderful offer for hiking enthusiasts. The hikes across the alpine pastures and from hut to hut are particularly beautiful - because hiking also makes you hungry.
Please treat the people who work here, nature and the animals with respect! By enjoying or buying regional products, you can support the work of our farmers! Good cooperation is only possible if the 10 rules of conduct for visitors are observed. So that the mountain pastures remain open for recreational users!

Good to know!
The Almenland Nature Park is the largest low mountain pasture area in Europe with a total of 125 mountain pastures. Unlike national parks, nature parks are not primeval landscapes, but man-made cultural landscapes. The open alpine pastures only exist thanks to the tireless, hard work of our farmers, who keep the alpine pastures clear of undergrowth by turning and herding cattle, thus making it possible to hike on the alpine pastures with an unobstructed view of the landscape. Please treat the people who work here, nature and the animals with respect! By enjoying or buying regional products, you can support the work of our farmers! Good cooperation is only possible if the 10 rules of conduct for visitors to alpine pastures are observed. So that the mountain pastures remain open for recreational users!
Hunting has also been part of our mountain pastures for centuries. It ensures a healthy animal population and prevents game damage from getting out of hand with the shooting plan. Hunting is also part of alpine pasture management. Hikers and cyclists are asked to adhere to the following rules to adhere to the following rules:
- To ensure that wild animals also have sufficient peace and quiet, please refrain from hiking from one hour before sunset to one hour before sunrise! This is also for your own safety during the hunting season, as hunting takes place at dusk.
- Please stay on the paths and make sure that you are clearly visible, especially at dusk (bright, colorful clothing and headlamps).
- Dogs must always be kept on a leash!
- Pay attention to signs! If driven hunts are announced, avoid the area or refrain from hiking at all.
We would like to thank the members of the Alpine Club and the Friends of Nature for the often laborious maintenance and signposting of the hiking trails!
Please make sure you have the right equipment:
- Take appropriate food and plenty of water with you - or check out the refreshment stops along the way.
- A good hiking boot is a good companion and should never be missing.
- An emergency kit (blister plasters!) belongs in every rucksack.
- Dress according to the "onion principle" and don't forget rain protection.
- Don't forget your sunglasses, sun protection, hiking map and camera.
Out and about on the Teichalm with supervising hunter Peter
During a leisurely hike on the Heulantsch circuit on the Teichalm, we were able to accompany Peter, the supervising hunter, and ask him a few questions about his work. In particular, we took a close look at the topic of "Hunting meets hiking tourism". The magnificent view from the Heulantsch summit over the Teichalmsee lake and far beyond the alpine pastures rewarded the interview.
Awareness of the alpine pasture
In the nature park Almenland , great efforts are being made to ensure good cooperation between alpine farmers and tourism. Especially after last year's "cow verdict", we appeal to the sense of responsibility of every single alpine pasture user. The short film "Awareness for the Alpine pasture" shows what is important to us.

Hiking is a guest's delight!
The main activity in the Almenland Nature Park is definitely hiking over gentle hills, lush green meadows, up to the mountain peaks or between the rugged gorges and rocks. That's why there are numerous guided hikes and events on this theme.
Hiking days on public holidays are particularly popular, for example the popular May summit hike in Koglhof, the Mühlental hiking day in St. Kathrein am Offenegg or the Vogelbeer hiking day on the national holiday in St. Kathrein am Offenegg. A special highlight is the 24-hour or 12-hour hike in Breitenau am Hochlantsch. Here, guests from near and far hike for 12 or 24 hours, without sleep but with breaks and refreshments.
In order for our nature park to look the way it does and for hikers to enjoy the magnificent views, we need our farmers and the animals that care for our landscape. This is why the"Day of the Styrian Alpine Pastures" takes place every year. Everyone is invited to help with the "Schwenden".
