World Champion Cheese

It is thanks to Franz Möstl, an avid cheese lover, that cheese is now maturing into a delicacy in the tunnels of the former silver mine. He turned his passion into a career, purchased the “Grubenhaus” in 2009, had a 270-meter tunnel dug into the mountain, and converted the“Grubenhaus”intothe “Käsewerkstatt.”

Today, a wide variety of cheeses made from cow, sheep, and goat milk are aged here. The cheeses are produced at the Leitner Alpine Dairy and Almenland exclusively with milk from the Almenland .

Since 2012, Franz Möstl’s specialty cheeses have regularly won Super Gold, Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at the World Cheese Awards, the World Championship Cheese Contest (USA), and the Käsiade.

Among its greatest achievements are several Super Gold Awards—the highest honor at the World Cheese Awards—for the Arzberger Bellino (2014), the Erzherzog Johann Cheese with Red Wine ( 2015), the Arzberger Knappenkäse (2016), the Capellaro (2017), the Caprissimum (2018), and the Arzberger Ursteirer and Capellaro ( 2019).

Leadership 2026:
