Meditative Trail Around the Brandlucken

This easy loop trail passes through 13 stops that connect the springs and fountains around Heilbrunn. The beautifully designed rest areas invite you to pause, reflect, or simply enjoy the view. You can access the accompanying spiritual stories at www.hbweg.at; the guidebook is available free of charge at local restaurants and in the parish church.

The Brandlucken, this “clearing” between the Sommeralm and St. Kathrein am Offenegg, derives its name from slash-and-burn farming. The need for land led to settlements in higher elevations during the 13th and 14th centuries; until the 19th century, the land cleared in this way was used primarily for growing grain.

The pilgrimage site of Heilbrunndates back to the 17th century, when a cross was erected near a spring known for its healing properties. In front of the church stands a chapel with a fountain and a group of sculptures depicting the Visitation of the Virgin Mary; the healing water is said to be particularly effective for eye ailments.
