A Vacation with the Whole Family

There are several excellent hiking trails for families with children in the Almenland Nature Park. Themed trails are also ideal for a day trip with the whole family. All of the trails listed are no more than five kilometers long and involve little to no elevation gain.

• The Raab Source Loop leads, as the name suggests, to the foot of the Osser, where the Raab River has its source. This one-hour loop covers three kilometers and gains 205 meters in elevation; the Waldmühle snack bar is the perfect spot for a break right along the trail.
   
• The adventure trail in the music village of Gasen provides a wealth of interesting information about flood protection under the motto “Source of Life & Natural Hazards.” The roughly three-kilometer trail, with an elevation gain of 164 meters, can be walked in about an hour; however, there are many stops—such as Austria’s first “water cinema”—that are well worth exploring in detail and may take a little longer.
   
• At Koglhof, you can learn all about the forest and nature on the approximately three-kilometer-long forest nature trail. You can learn how nature can affect human health from the numerous information panels along the one-hour trail, which covers a total elevation gain of 105 meters.
   
• The family-friendly Forest and Bee Nature Trail starts right in the center of Passail, from where it leads up to the Lindenberg. You can also stop at the Almenland Kreiner Almenland for a guided tour or honey tasting. You should plan on spending an hour and a half for the roughly four-kilometer loop with a 150-meter elevation gain.
   
• You can learn about the history of silver mining on the Mining Trail in Arzberg. Information boards offer a glimpse into more than 750 years of mining history. A guided tour of the exhibition mine is also a great way to complement the experience. At five kilometers, the trail is somewhat longer, but with an elevation gain of 170 meters, the loop takes about an hour and a half and is manageable even for young hikers.
   
• In St. Kathrein am Offenegg, the rowan takes center stage. The rowan, also known as the bird cherry, is the Almenland. It can be used to make many different delicious products. Along the nearly five-kilometer-long Rowanberry Panorama Trail , many interactive stations await young hikers. In about an hour and a half, covering 175 meters of elevation gain, you can learn a lot about the rowan tree; the trail can also be combined with a visit to the Sulamith Garden or the Graf Distillery.
   
• The well-known Moor Nature Trail on the Teichalm leads through one of Austria’s last mountain pine bogs. The trail crosses the bog on flat wooden planks, making it fully accessible! Along the two-kilometer-long trail, you’ll learn all about the bog’s formation, as well as its flora and fauna. To explore all the colorfully designed information panels in detail, you should plan 45 minutes for the walk.
   
• Erich Haider-Harrer is known on the Nechnitz for his woodcarving skills. Along the approximately three-kilometer-long Wooden Sculpture Trail , over 45 different carved wooden figures are waiting to be discovered. With an elevation gain of 279 meters, the one-and-a-half-hour hike is one of the more challenging themed trails for families with children.

In particular, the Farm Holidaysare especially popular with families with children, as the hosts offer a wide range of activities for kids. Whether it’s pony rides, helping with haymaking, grooming and feeding the animals, or simply running around and playing in the green meadows—there’s so much to discover on the farms in Almenland!

There is a wide variety of attractions to explore in the Almenland Nature Park. Children will especially enjoy the active attractions, such as the Almerlebnispark on the Teichalm or the summer toboggan run in Koglhof.
