The Bärenschützklamm is one of the most beautiful water-filled rock gorges in Austria and offers an impressive experience for all hikers. It has been a natural monument since 1978. Limestone walls up to 300 meters high surround the gorge and the waterfalls; 168 bridges and ladders with a total of over 3,000 wooden rungs were painstakingly installed and offer a breathtaking hiking experience.

A nature experience amid waterfalls and cliffs

The hike through the Bärenschützklamm gorge takes you over spectacular wooden ladders, bridges, and climbing structures along roaring waterfalls to the Zum Guten Hirten rest stop. From there, there are numerous options for extending the tour—for example, to the Schüsserlbrunn pilgrimage church, up to the Hochlantsch, to the Steirischer Jokl, or to the Teichalm.

A one-way system is in effect through the gorge. Depending on the route you choose, the return trip follows the so-called Prügelweg or continues as a long-distance hike toward Breitenau or Teichalm.

With several loop trails and point-to-point hikes, the Bärenschützklamm is ideal for both experienced hikers and anyone who wants to discover one of Styria’s most beautiful natural experiences.

In the event of heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, or hail, the gorge may be closed on short notice for safety reasons. Registration is not required.

There are three parking lots available in Mixnitz for your visit. From the premium parking lot, it’s just a one-hour walk to the entrance of the Bärenschützklamm. During the season, a shuttle or sightseeing train also runs every 20 minutes between the parking lots and the starting point.

Bärli Express

Shuttle to the Bärenschützklamm Gorge

During the season, the Bärli-Express takes you comfortably from the parking lots to the starting point of the Bärenschützklamm. The shuttle runs every half hour from Thursday through Sunday between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Road Conditions

The hike through the Bärenschützklamm gorge follows well-secured climbing routes featuring 168 wooden ladders, numerous bridges, and more than 3,000 wooden rungs. The tour is complemented by narrow forest trails, footpaths, and forest roads. Due to the many steps, damp surfaces, and steep sections, the gorge is challenging and requires sure-footedness, a head for heights, and good basic physical fitness. Since the gorge is managed as a one-way system, the return trip is via the Prügelweg or an alternative hiking route, depending on the chosen tour.

Note: Wooden ladders and walkways can be slippery when wet. Please wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction and check the latest weather and opening information before your hike.

There are various ways to explore the Bärenschützklamm. Both Mixnitz (which has a train station and several parking lots) and the Teichalm are suitable starting points. In addition to classic loop hikes, point-to-point hikes—for example, to Breitenau or the Teichalm—are also possible. Thanks to the SAM shared taxi service in Eastern Styria, you can flexibly combine your starting and ending points.

Among the most popular hikes are the Bärenschützklamm Loop starting from Mixnitz or Teichalm (about 5 hours each), the hike to Breitenau (about 4.5 hours), and more challenging loop hikes via Schüsserlbrunn and the Hochlantsch (about 8 to 9 hours).
