The heart of the Almenland Nature Park Almenland the Teichalm, home to Lake Teichalm with its colorful rowboats, the wooden ox—which serves as the emblem of the ALMO gourmet region—the accessible bog nature trail, and the Energy Park.

The Teichalm consists of parts of Naturpark of Fladnitz an der Teichalm, Passail, Breitenau am Hochlantsch, and St. Kathrein am Offenegg. The alpine pasture area likely originated in the late Middle Ages; the land was cleared because the wood was needed as fuel for glass production. Only afterward were cattle grazed on the now-cleared land. The approximately 3,500 grazing animals on the alpine pastures are still responsible today, during their summer grazing season, for preventing the alpine areas from becoming overgrown. The animals are represented by the large wooden ox statue right on Lake Teichalm. It symbolizes the region’s flagship product—the delicious ALMO beef.

Lake Teichalm

Surrounded by lush green meadows, Lake Teichalm glistens at an elevation of about 1,200 meters above sea level. About 200 years ago, there was already a small lake on the Teichalm; according to legend, the mountain spirits caused the alpine pasture to vanish beneath the water because of the farmers’ misdeeds. However, the lake had silted up and was restored in the 1970s by damming the Mixnitzbach stream. The lake is no more than four meters deep and, due to its rather cool temperature, is not suitable for swimming. It serves as an ideal destination for day trips in both summer and winter:

The Wooden Ox

This Almo ox stands right on the shores of Lake Teichalm and is the symbol of the Almenland Nature Park. It is clad with 22,000 wooden shingles and represents the region’s flagship product, the ALMO Almo ox. The Mountain Pine Bog

Right next to Lake Teichalmsee lies one of Austria’s last mountain pine bogs and the only one in the Graz Mountains. Along the bog nature trail—which runs across the bog on wooden planks and is therefore accessible to everyone—you’ll discover a rich variety of flora and fauna. The trail is free to explore, and a viewing platform and comfortable benches invite you to linger. The trail runs along larch planks, and informational signs explain the unique features of this natural gem. The loop takes about 30 minutes to complete and is also accessible by wheelchair or stroller! In winter, the trail is closed due to icy conditions!
