Hike from Nechnitz

Follow the Wooden Sculpture Trail up to the Gschaid-Nock and on to the Gerler Cross: a varied hiking trail that includes a summit climb and places to stop for a break.

Chainsaw woodcarving is the hobby of Erich Haider-Harrer, who also runs a restaurant and farms on the Nechnitz, the high plateau in the municipality of Fladnitz an der Teichalm. With his wooden figures—mainly local forest animals—he has now created a wonderful trail leading up from the Nechnitz almost to the summit of the Gschaid Nock. The trail starts right at Haider’s alpine inn. Over 45 different wooden figures, benches, an energy fountain, and informational signs line the 1.5-kilometer trail up to the summit. There, a magnificent panoramic view awaits. With the help of the large information board, hikers can easily identify the surrounding mountains. The trail continues—now across alpine meadows—past the Wildkogel to the Gerler Cross. There, the Gerlerkogel Hut awaits hungry and thirsty hikers. The return route then leads past the Gerler Cross and the hamlet of Hintereben, with its farmsteads, back to the Nechnitz River.
