Hay Milk, Cheese & True Artistry

The story of Almenland begins at the Leitner Alpine Dairy.

Where the finest cheese is made from Almenland best Almenland: At the Leitner Alpine Dairy in Tulwitz, milk has been processed right on the farm for three generations. On a guided tour, visitors can follow the journey from fresh hay milk to finished cheese— including a tasting, of course .

Since 2009, Christoph and Jasmin Leitner have been processing milk from their own cows in their modern on-farm dairy. This high-quality hay milk is used to produce numerous specialties—including the popular Teichalmer, various fresh cheeses, and a large portion of the well-known Almenland , which then develops its distinctive flavor in the Arzberg aging cave.

The cows are fed exclusively on grass and hay. In the summer, some of the cows spend the warm season on the Teichalm, where some of the milk is processed directly at the Harrerhütte.

Here's what visitors can expect:

  • Interactive tour from hay to the barn to cheese; duration: about 1.5 hours.

  • Video Presentation: “The Makers of Stollen Cheese”

Where the milk is processed right at the alpine pasture

The Leitner family also owns the Harrerhütte on the Teichalm —the only active alpine dairy in Eastern Styria.

During the summer, young cattle and some of the dairy cows spend the warm season here. The freshly milked milk is processed right on site into delicious alpine butter, which, of course, you can also sample.

The Harrerhütte is situated in a quiet location, about three kilometers from Lake Teichalm, and is a popular destination for hikers, those seeking relaxation, and those looking for peace and quiet.

Open: June through September (closed Mondays and Tuesdays)
