About 25 kilometers north of Graz, you can visit Austria’s largest active water cave and discover a bizarre underground world full of sinter formations, stalactites, massive rock domes, and underground gorges.

Follow the Lurbach downstream into the cave world, but don’t rely on it, for soon it will disappear into the depths of the cave and leave you alone on your journey through this timeless, subterranean cosmos, where imagination knows no bounds.

Summer Hours (April 15 through October 31):

daily at 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.
During summer vacation, additional guided tours are offered daily at 9:40 a.m. and 12:40 p.m.

Winter Hours (November 2 through April 14):

Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Christmas break from December 27 through January 6: daily guided tours at 11:00 a.m.
The cave is closed on November 1 and December 25–26
Groups of 5 or more can also be accommodated at other times by prior arrangement.

Guided Tours

The Semriach Cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour. There are set tour times, and groups of 5 or more can also book a private tour.

Tour duration: approx. 70 minutes

The path winds through narrow passages, grottoes, and niches—always accompanied by the sound of dripping water—to the Bear Grotto, where the bones of the cave bear were found; this species lived in Central Europe during the Ice Age and became extinct many millennia ago.

Soon you’ll reach the Great Dome, one of the highlights of the tour. Its size is particularly impressive: at 120 meters long, 80 meters wide, and 40 meters high, it is one of the largest cave domes in Central Europe.

Another unique feature is the Giant (the world’s largest free-hanging stalactite), which hangs from the cave ceiling into the chamber, measuring 13 meters in height, 9 meters in circumference, and weighing 40 metric tons. The temperature inside the grotto is +9 degrees Celsius, with 95% humidity.

During the tour, you’ll also experience a beautiful light show accompanied by classical music, depicting a battle between good and evil. For several years now, the Lurgrotte in Semriach—the first stalactite cave in Austria to do so—has been featuring a new, spectacular LED lighting system. This lighting makes the stalactite formations shine even more impressively in their natural colors and beauty.

The Semriach Cave is one of Austria’s most famous caves. The earliest depictions date back to the early 17th century, and it was first mentioned in a document in 1822. It gained fame in 1894 when seven speleologists were trapped for nine days following a sudden flood and were rescued in a spectacular operation. The first guided tours began in 1895. In 1935, explorers successfully traversed the entire cave all the way to Peggau. Following flood damage in 1975, approximately two kilometers of the cave are once again accessible to visitors today.
