Family Hike with "Pozilo"

Easy | 3 km | 1 hr | 205 hm
Hohenau / Passail

One of the most beautiful short hikes in the Almenland Nature Park begins at the source of the Raab River.

  • Raabursprung Farm

To the Raab Spring via "Pozilo"

North of Passail, at the foot of the Osser and in the heart of the Almenland Nature Park, the Raab River has its source. This legendary river flows 250 km through Eastern Styria and Hungary until it joins the Danube near Győr. A few kilometers past Passail, the Raab forms Austria’s longest gorge, which is also a popular destination for hikers (Raabklamm Loop Trail).

The trail follows a wide curve to the source of the Raab and back down to the Waldmühle rest stop, located at the head of the valley north of Passail. This family-friendly hiking trail passes several steeply situated mountain farms, and along the way, the story of “Pozilo,” the stag, and the little droplet “Sprungingerl” is told.

If you’d like to extend the hike a bit, you can hike steeply uphill from the source of the Raab to the “Schwoabauer-Kreuz” on the Sommeralm (Trail No. 754, about 1/2 hour, 200 meters of elevation gain).

Places to Stop for a Meal

After your hike to the source of the Raab River, you’ve earned a relaxing stop. Right at the trailhead, the Waldmühle rest stop invites you to take a well-deserved break with regional delicacies and refreshing drinks.

If you’d like to wind down your outing at a leisurely pace, you’ll find more places to stop for a bite to eat just a few minutes’ drive away in the center of Passail. Whether it’s regional cuisine at Der Schrenk, Styrian home-style cooking at the Hexenstub’n, or a sweet treat at the Almcafé Passail —there’s something here to suit every taste. On warm days in particular, a scoop of ice cream after a hike tastes twice as good.

Road Conditions

The Raabursprung Loop follows well-maintained forest and logging trails. The trail is generally easy, but it has a few steeper sections and is therefore not suitable for strollers or buggies.
