Explore Pernegg at a leisurely pace
This easy loop hike takes you through the villages of Kirchdorf and Pernegg and is perfect when combined with a stop at one of the excellent local restaurants.
The municipality of Pernegg is located directly on the Mur River, 10 km south of Bruck an der Mur and 40 km north of Graz. Pernegg is part of the R2 Mur Cycle Route and the Drachentour , making it a mecca for cyclists. Thanks to the Pernegg and Mixnitz train stations on the Südbahn line, the municipality of Pernegg serves as the gateway to Almenland.
The first traces of human habitation date back some 50,000 years to the Drachenhöhle cave near Mixnitz. In 1103, “Gerhoch de Trevesse” (Traföß) was first mentioned in a document as the earliest known owner of the Pernegger area. In 1130, the parish church in Kirchdorf, the Maximilian Church, was mentioned in a document; in 1439, the first small Church of Our Lady in Pernegg was built.
Pernegg has a vibrant business community with many retail and commercial enterprises, as well as the hydroelectric power plant operated by Verbund Austrian Hydro Power AG, including a demonstration turbine.
