In the Footsteps of Traditional Craftsmanship
A leisurely loop trail from the town center to the Schreinhofer Mill. The trail is suitable for the whole family—even with a dog, since you won't come across grazing livestock along the way.
The trail leads from the center of Gasen out to the Schreinhofer Mill , which features Austria’s largest millwheel still in working order. For groups and by advance reservation, drinks are served at the mill tavern, and the traditional Brennsterz is prepared there.
The path leads past the “Troadkostn,” where life-size, carved nativity figures can be admired during Advent, and past the parish church, which has two patron saints: St. Oswald is a much-revered patron saint of livestock and reflects the area’s agricultural history, while St. Barbara, as the patron saint of miners, alludes to the mining industry of days gone by. Iron ore, gold, silver, and arsenic were mined around Gasen until the 19th century.
Along the way, hikers can enjoy beautiful views and the occasional bench to rest on, with fresh mountain air, birdsong, and soft forest floors as added bonuses.
