At 1,720 meters, the Hochlantsch is the highest mountain in the Almenland Nature Park Almenland is one of the region’s most popular hiking destinations. This varied loop hike combines impressive panoramic views, the unique Schüsserlbrunn pilgrimage church, and—depending on the route you choose—the spectacular Bärenschützklamm gorge for an unforgettable mountain experience.

From Lake Teichalm to the Hochlantsch

Hike up the 1,720-meter-high Hochlantsch, the region’s highest mountain, and visit the picturesque Schüsserlbrunn pilgrimage chapel . This tour can be easily combined with the Bärenschützklamm , which is one of Austria’s most beautiful water-filled gorges.

The starting point is the idyllic Teichalmsee, which, surrounded by rolling alpine pastures, forms the heart of the nature park. Right on the lake stands the “Hölzerne Ochse”(Wooden Ox), the symbol of the Almenland beef-producing region, and the Teichalmmoor with its nature trail also borders directly on the lake.

ATTENTION:
The "Steirischer Jokl" inn, the "Zum Guten Hirten" inn, the "Schüsserlbrunn" pilgrimage church, and the Bärenschützklamm gorge are closed from November 1 through April 30!

Free public parking is available right next to Teichalmsee.

Alternative:
The tour can also start from Breitenau am Hochlantsch (Zirbisegger parking lot).

Road Conditions

The hike follows well-marked mountain trails, forest paths, and alpine trails. The ascent to the summit and the descent toward Schüsserlbrunn, in particular, are steeper and rocky in places. Sure-footedness and a good level of fitness are recommended.

The route through the Bärenschützklamm gorge is significantly more challenging and involves numerous ladders and climbing aids. It is suitable only for experienced hikers.
