A place of power between the rocks and the sky

Schüsserlbrunn has always been a popular destination: the picturesque little wooden church on the Hochlantsch cliff has been visited by pilgrims for centuries, and hikers have always made their way there as well. In 2018, however, the church was voted “Styria’s most popular destination” as part of the ORF’s “Große Österreich-Show ” and took third place in the national competition.

The pilgrimage site is accessible only on foot; the easiest route leads from the Teichalm along the Mixnitzbach (toward “Guter Hirte”) and then up to the “Steirischer Jokl” inn, and from there down 198 wooden steps to the church square. Even though the trail doesn’t have much elevation gain, it’s still a good 12 kilometers to walk. Schüsserlbrunn can also be reached via a hike through the Bärenschützklamm or a loop around Hochlantsch. Trails also lead up to the church from the village of Breitenau am Hochlantsch.

ATTENTION: The church and the "Steirischer Jokl" inn are closed from November 1 through April 30!

Free parking is available around Teichalmsee.

Alternative: The hike can also start from Breitenau am Hochlantsch (Zirbisegger parking lot).

Road Conditions

The hike follows mostly well-marked forest trails, forest roads, and stairways. The section leading down to Schüsserlbrunn includes 198 wooden steps and requires sure-footedness. The hike is suitable for experienced hikers in good physical condition.
