Austria's Largest Water-Active Stalactite Cave

The Lurgrotte Peggau is located about 20 km north of the state capital and is an easily accessible, popular tourist destination in the Graz region.

It is the Schmelzbach that brings this underground labyrinth of the Lurgrotte to life.
The fact that this cave is described as a wonder of nature has to do not only with the power of the water—which has been enlarging the cave for millions of years and carving the rock into unique shapes —but also with the persistence of this element.
During the one-hour guided tour, visitors follow concrete, secured paths one kilometer deep into the world of stalactites and stalagmites.

The Peggau Limestone Cave isn't just an ideal activity for bus groups on rainy days —it also offers a cool respite, especially on hot summer days:

  • The indoor temperature is +10 degrees all year round.
  • humidity at nearly 95%

History of the Lurgrotte Cave in Peggau

The Lurgrotte Peggau is one of Austria’s largest and most impressive cave systems. Although the cave had been known for centuries, it was not until 1894 that speleologist Max Brunello succeeded in gaining access to its deeper sections. That same year, the Lurgrotte became world-famous thanks to a spectacular rescue operation: Seven explorers were trapped for nine days following heavy rainfall and were eventually rescued by over 1,000 helpers. After extensive development work, it became possible to traverse the cave along a route approximately six kilometers long starting in 1963. However, a once-in-a-century flood destroyed large parts of the facilities in 1975. Today, the visitor areas in Peggau and Semriach are accessible separately.
